Inspection methods

Four ways to interrogate a weld without touching it.

Every method answers a different question. The skill is choosing the right one for the flaw you are actually worried about, and being honest when a second method is needed.

Ultrasonic Testing

A high-frequency sound pulse is coupled into the material and the returning echoes are timed. Anything that interrupts the sound path, a lack of fusion, a crack, a lamination, sends an echo back early. That gives you depth and size, not just a yes or no.

  • Volumetric flaw detection through the full wall thickness
  • Wall thickness and remaining-life measurement on corroded pipe and plate
  • Lamination checks on incoming plate before fabrication starts
  • No radiation, so work continues around the inspection

Which method does your job actually need?

The honest answer is that it depends on the flaw you are worried about and the material it would be in. This is how we reason about it before quoting.

A crack you could see if you knew where to look

Start with visual inspection, then confirm with magnetic particle on ferritic steel or liquid penetrant on stainless and non-ferrous. Surface methods are quick, sensitive and cheap, and they resolve most fabrication disputes without escalating.

Something buried inside the weld metal

Lack of fusion, lack of penetration, slag and internal cracking do not reach the surface, so no surface method will find them. This is ultrasonic territory. UT gives you depth and through-wall extent, which is what a fitness-for-service assessment needs.

Wall loss on something already in service

Ultrasonic thickness measurement, taken on a defined grid so the readings can be compared against the same points at the next survey. A single spot reading tells you almost nothing. A repeatable grid tells you a corrosion rate, and a corrosion rate tells you a remaining life.

The code has already specified the method

Then that is the method, and our job is to execute it correctly and document it properly. If we believe the specified method will not find the flaw that matters on your component, we will tell you before mobilising rather than after invoicing.

An inspection is only worth what the report can defend.

Anyone can wave a probe over a weld. What a client is buying is a finding that holds up in front of a welding engineer, an insurer, or a regulator.

Reports written to be argued with

Every report states the technique, the equipment and calibration block used, the code and acceptance class applied, and the disposition of each indication with its location. If a finding is challenged, the paperwork answers the challenge on its own.

Findings before paperwork

A rejectable indication is raised with your site supervisor immediately, not held until the report is typed.

Site-ready, not workshop-bound

Portable, battery-capable equipment and technicians inducted for live plant, height and confined space work.

Namibian technicians

Local capability, local rates, and skills that stay in the country as the sector grows.

How a Daweb inspection runs.

The sequence is the same whether it is one lifting lug or a full pipeline spread. What changes is the scale.

Scope

We agree what is being inspected, to which code and acceptance class, at what extent, and what a fail means for your programme. Getting this wrong is the single most expensive mistake in inspection, so it is settled in writing before anyone travels.

Mobilise

Technicians, calibrated equipment and consumables arrive on site with the technique sheet already written. Inductions, permits and access requirements are handled ahead of arrival so that the first hour on site is inspection, not administration.

Inspect

Calibration is verified on the reference block before the first joint and again at the end of the shift. Each joint is inspected, marked and recorded against its number, and anything rejectable is raised with your supervisor there and then.

Report

You receive a signed report covering the technique, the calibration record, the acceptance criteria and every indication with its location and disposition, plus a repair-and-retest register where applicable.

UTMTPTVT

Built in Namibia, for what Namibia is about to build.

Daweb Quality Inspection was founded on 9 April 2025 in Windhoek, at the point where the country stopped talking about an offshore industry and started constructing one.

For a long time, serious inspection work here meant flying in a team, paying for their travel and accommodation, and waiting on their schedule. That was workable when the volume was low. It stops being workable the moment a build programme needs inspection coverage daily.

The bar is not "good enough for local work." The bar is a report that would be accepted without comment on a project in Aberdeen or Rotterdam. Anything less will simply be replaced by a foreign contractor the first time it is tested, and the skills leave the country again.

How we work, stated plainly.

These are the commitments a client can hold us to. They are here so they can be quoted back at us if we ever fall short of them.

Independence

We do not weld, and we do not repair. That means we have no interest in the outcome of an inspection beyond reporting it correctly. An inspection body that also sells the repair has a conflict it cannot argue its way out of.

Bad news travels fastest

A rejectable indication is raised with your supervisor on site, before it is written up. The report confirms what you already know. Nobody should learn about a failed weld from a PDF three days later.

The code decides, not us

Acceptance criteria come from your fabrication or in-service standard. We apply them, we record which revision and class was applied, and we do not move the line to make a result more comfortable for anyone.

Skills stay in the country

Every technician we certify is one more piece of inspection capability that Namibia owns. We train locally and we hire locally, because that is the only version of this industry worth building.

The people who do the work.

An inspection is only as good as the technician holding the probe, which is why we would rather you knew who they are.

Certification and compliance.

Buyers in this sector check credentials before they check price, and rightly so. Everything here should be filled in with what Daweb actually holds today, and updated as new certifications are earned. Nothing on this page should overstate the position.

Certificates for personnel and equipment calibration are supplied with every quotation on request, and attached to the inspection report where the client requires them.

Questions we are asked before the first job.

If your question is not here, ask it directly. We would rather scope a job properly than win one on a misunderstanding.

What is non-destructive testing?

Non-destructive testing, or NDT, is a group of inspection techniques that assess the condition of a material, weld or component without damaging it or taking it out of service. The part stays usable after the test, which is exactly what separates NDT from destructive methods such as tensile or bend testing.

Which methods does Daweb offer?

The four conventional methods, all delivered in-house: ultrasonic testing, magnetic particle inspection, liquid penetrant testing and visual inspection. Between them they cover surface-breaking, near-surface and volumetric flaw detection on welds, plate, pipe, castings and structural steel.

Do you travel to site anywhere in Namibia?

Yes. We mobilise nationally from Windhoek, including the Walvis Bay and Lüderitz port corridors, inland mining operations and remote construction sites. The equipment is portable and battery-capable, so an inspection never depends on a workshop being nearby.

How quickly do we get the report?

Preliminary findings are given on site the moment an inspection is complete, so a rejectable indication never waits for paperwork. The formal report follows within the turnaround agreed in your scope, and it carries the technique sheet, the calibration record, the acceptance criteria applied and the disposition of every indication.

What standards do you inspect to?

The acceptance criteria come from your fabrication or in-service code, not from us. The applicable code, its revision and the acceptance class are agreed before mobilisation and recorded on the report, so there is never an argument afterwards about which line was being measured against.

Why does Namibian oil and gas need this now?

The Orange Basin discoveries are driving new fabrication, pipework, storage and port infrastructure. Every pressure-retaining weld, structural connection and lifting point in that build-out has a safety and financial consequence if it fails. NDT is the accepted way to prove integrity before commissioning, and to keep proving it in service.
